The Melbourne Observatory is a scientific research institution in Melbourne Australia. It was established in 1862.
The initial purpose for the observatory was to maintain an accurate time reference for the former British Colony. It was subsequently used for weather forecasting and astronomical research.
Public tours of this historic observatory are provided from the Astronomical Society of Victoria.
If you visit the observatory on a clear evening, you'll be able to seen the southern sky using one of the historic telescopes.
The Melbourne Observatory is located between the Royal Botanic Garden and Shrine of Remembrance.
